Skrenta's Ethics

“If you tell a lie big enough and keep repeating it, people will eventually come to believe it. The lie can be maintained only for such time as the State can shield the people from the political, economic and/or military consequences of the lie. It thus becomes vitally important for the State to use all of its powers to repress dissent, for the truth is the mortal enemy of the lie, and thus by extension, the truth is the greatest enemy of the State.”

This is a Joseph Goebbels quote, the famous minister of propaganda at Hitler's goverment. If you change 2 terms at this quote, (State by Staff/Meta Community and economic/military consequences by expulsion) , this quote can define the real policy of DMOZ.
The basic lie of DMOZ is that is a Republic. Totally fake concept. DMOZ nowadays is a pyramidal structure, with an owner (AOL), serving a few individual interests, and applying the same procedure that an absolutist monarchy.
His founder, Rich Skrenta, is not an example of morality even in the past or present. The major lies of the history of the humanity were mounted always by people as Skrenta. Intelligent but without scruples.
Richard "Rich" Skrenta (b.1967 in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania) is a computer programmer, and author of what is considered the first computer virus to be found 'in the wild': the Elk Cloner virus that infected Apple II machines in 1982... Not exactly what I will recommend to my sons.... And in present is the founder of Topix.net, a millionaire internet business based in a SEO trick, as himself describes at his own blog:

What do you do when your success ... sucks?

The SEO trick he describes there is just 19.000 automated listings at DMOZ done with a tool designed by himself, and placed at DMOZ pages before to be sold to AOL.

Skrenta's ethics are the base of what is running inside DMOZ today. A META community extracting profit of his position to defend his own networks of websites, its bussines or ideas (not always it is the money what moves a dictator).
The way they do will be described here in different chapters. The most common way is the "Multiple Head" editor system, the tool that META community manages the listings of its networks simulating a democratic listing.

Of course inside DMOZ still a few honest people disappointed with the system...but are in minority to fight the army of METAS, Admins and Staff following the Skrenta's example.

Out of DMOZ the lie is repeated again and again with enough success ...at the moment.
